BALMACEDA AND SERRANO GLACIERS

AN ANDEAN ADVENTURE

The Balmaceda and Serrano glaciers are located within the Bernardo O'Higgins National Park, 31 miles northwest of Puerto Natales, part of the Andes mountain range. Access is only by sea, navigating through the Ultima Esperanza Fjord.

The journey starts at Puerto Bories pier, 15 minutes from downtown Puerto Natales. Once navigation begins, you can see the buildings of the Bories meat processing plant, one of Patagonia’s largest meat processing industries. Observe a colony of Imperial Cormorants, a small sea lion colony, and various plants like Coigüe, Canelo, Lenga, Ñire, Chilco, and Calafate.

The Balmaceda Glacier can be seen from the boat, but to visit Serrano Glacier, a 20-minute walk along a trail bordering a small lake formed by glacier melt is necessary.
